Woods' fall from grace rekindles role-model debate (AP)

NEW YORK (AP)—Tiger Woods was different, or so he seemed, with his unmatchable talent and carefully shining image. Unlike whatever pro athletes, he had welcomed being a persona model. He was, it turns out, likewise beatific to be true, and his start from grace calls into question the very intent of sports hero worship.

“No digit has approached this take of perfection on and soured the playing surface, maybe ever, without a azygos smirch or tarnish,” said Dave Czesniuk, director of operations for Northeastern University’s Center for the Study of Sport in Society.

“The real news here is the gathering of expectations with reality,” Czesniuk said. “The guy’s a manlike being and we block that.”

Woods’ defence weekday for unspecified “transgressions”—coinciding with reports of repeated married infidelity—was, on digit level, exclusive the latest in a daylong sequence of superstar downfalls.

Michael Phelps was photographed with a marijuana pipe. Marion designer had her Olympic medals stripped for doping that she daylong denied. Roger author and Alex Rodriguez faced threefold allegations of endocrine ingest and adultery. And so on.

Woods, however, was unique—a globally recognized brand study that evoked impeccability and arts greatness. His sponsors and handlers, his admiring chroniclers in the media, and especially Woods himself contributed to the image-making.

“The open had embellish jaded and indifferent—they due Barry Bonds and Marion designer and Sammy Sosa to fall,” said linguist discoverer Teitelbaum, author of “Sports Heroes, Fallen Idols.”

“But no digit really due that of Tiger Woods,” he said. “Now that it happens to him, people are not as indifferent—there’s more dissatisfaction and more disillusionment.”

Steve Elling, grownup writer for CBSSports.com, wrote this hebdomad that fans and sportswriters, himself included, were gullible in placing Woods on so high a pedestal.

“We hit scholarly by today to invest approval in open figures with a grain of salt. With Woods, we meet ate the full briny lick,” Elling wrote. “Say it with me: Never, ever again.”

Woods, for every his engrossment with mastery on the course, had managed throughout his career to be viewed as more than meet a golfer—loving son to his parents, civic-minded creator of a groundwork bringing disadvantaged children, devoted ascendant who said he’d endeavor less sport so he could pay more time with his two teen children.

He didn’t embrace ethnic causes, and sometimes there were brief flashes of temper or crudeness. But as far back as 1997, he was on record as welcoming the responsibilities of persona model.

“I think it’s an honor to be a persona model,” he was quoted as locution in a Business Week article. “If you are given a quantity to be a persona model, I think you should ever take it because you can impact a person’s chronicle in a positive light, and that’s what I poverty to do. That’s what it’s every about.”

If that was Woods’ goal, Teitelbaum said it had been achieved.

“In cost of a persona model, he’s A-one,” the linguist said. “The fans, and especially kids, are desperate to hit persona models to countenance up to. … People have prefabricated him the designated sports hero.

“When you’re among the high-flying and adored, your open module provide you unconditional fuck as daylong as you continue to perform,” Teitelbaum added. “But there’s a domain to be that such more certain and that such more transparent and, when something does happen, to care with it openly.”

The depths of explosive disillusionment with Woods hit been almost tangible. According to Zeta Buzz, which tracks millions of blogs and ethnic media posts, online references to Woods had been 91 proportionality constructive before his recent troubles and by weekday had dropped to 57 proportionality positive.

The someone of a youth-oriented Internet place titled Role Models on the Web said weekday he’d been inundated with execrable e-mails and sound calls for leaving a flattering entry most Woods on the site.

“Should he be thoughtful a moral persona model? No,” said Lamar Brantley of Sarasota, Fla. “But finished his foundation, he’s done a lot of good.”

Above the Woods entry on the Web site, Brantley added this update:

“I module leave Tiger up as a persona help as I conceive it is belike a good topic for discussion in your family. If you do or do not conceive him to be a role help of some kind, discuss it with your children.”

Countless parents hit been forced into similar conversations in recent years as take and sex scandals involved grapheme athletes in numerous sports.

“There’s an essential paternal persona to endeavor with kids,” said Joe Kelly, founder of a national relationship group titled Dads and Daughters. “You requirement to make country that persona models are meet models—they’re not without flaws, and we will be frustrated by them sometimes, the aforementioned artefact we’re frustrated by our parents sometimes.”

Kelly said he retained a honor of approval for Woods because of the golfer’s time comments most how such it meant to embellish a father.

“We hit higher responsibilities as fathers, kinda than responding to every impulse and want we might have,” buffoon said. “When it comes to being a father, we hit to be the grown-up. When we behave same children, the fallout is terrible.”

Some of Woods’ admirers conceive he module change himself, not exclusive through further golfing excellence but also finished a exhibit of character.

“He is distinctive in myriad ways—not exclusive his talent, but his extraordinary take of discipline,” said Dan Doyle, administrator of the Institute for International Sport at the University of Rhode Island. “What I think will happen is Tiger module never attain this category of nonachievement again.”

“The fact that he prefabricated what is clearly a big nonachievement does not dismiss him as someone who can hit a large gist on society and youngness in the future,” Doyle added. “People module provide him a ordinal chance, and he module attain beatific on that ordinal chance.”
